Amerikkalaissenaattori John McCain kuoli lauantaina 81-vuotiaana perheensä ja läheistensä paikalla ollessa.
John McCain sairasti aivosyöpää. Hän oli ollut senaatin työstä sivussa useita kuukausia. McCainin perhe kertoi vuorokautta aiemmin, että hänen syöpähoitonsa lopetetaan.
Vietnamin sodassa sotavankeuteen joutunut pilotti John McCain oli Barack Obaman vastaehdokas vuoden 2008 presidentinvaaleissa, joissa sai hieman alle 46 prosenttia kaikista äänistä.
